Grateful Dog Saves Baby

A recent news from Yahoo showed a Connecticut shelter dog that has been given a ‘thumbs up’ for
saving the life of Harper, a 9-week old baby who was discovered to have stopped breathing. We have
had heard many instances of dogs helping children and this has been once again reinforced by this
remarkable news.

Although there’s nothing really new here, just the mere dog-saving-baby act continues to amaze all of
us, a news-worthy item that is catchy and worth-sharing. Indeed, man's best friend can do a lot more
than fetch and roll over; a dog can feel, empathize and help in the most unassuming way.

According to Yahoo News, “The dog, named Duke, alerted the baby's parents that something was amiss
by jumping into their bed in the middle of the night. The dog was shaking uncontrollably.

The couple, Mr. and Mrs. Brousseau, from Portland, Connecticut, noticed the sudden change of
behavior since Duke was such an obedient and quiet dog. He suddenly burst into the room trying to
relay something. In an interview with WFSB-TV as seen in Yahoo News, Jenna Brousseau has this to
say, “He's insanely obedient so this was extremely bizarre.”

Because of this, they sensed something was extremely wrong. Both Jenna and her husband went in
to check the nursery where Harper was fast asleep. Duke did not stop pestering not until the couple
discovered Harper was no longer breathing.

They immediately called 911 and baby Harper was given immediate attention. If not for Duke’s
persistence and extremely bizarre behavior, the couple could have just ignored him, putting the life of
their baby at risk.

Duke was adopted by the Brousseaus from a shelter six years ago and since then, he became part of the
family. The arrival of Baby Harper completed the couple’s home and the incident that transpired proved
Duke’s gratitude and love for the family.

"He's the perfect dog," Brousseau said. "He was meant to be ours, and meant to be hers."

The Furry Fire Alarm

Tom Clancy was once quoted to say “The difference between reality and fiction; fiction has to make sense.” Witty as the quote is, it says a lot about which inspires what, if it is reality which affects fiction, or if it is the other way around.

In the case of a family based in Plainfield, Illinois, reality stands well on its own, with the family’s story telling how much reality actually affects fiction.

Their story tells of how a “furry fire” alarm managed to save them.

Based on reports from WGN-TV, a household was spared from the disaster of a fire, which broke out while the entire family was asleep. With such a scenario standing as the fear of any mother or father, Payton, the family’s dog, managed to save them by detecting the risk of the blaze, waking them up in an effort to ensure their safety.

Reports tell of how quick Payton was in alerting the youngest son of the family, when hints of the fire from the house’s basement came out. After waking up and getting a firm feel over what was going on, the lad was equally quick in calling the attention of everyone.

Joh Stratton, Fire Department Deputy Chief, was glad that no lives were put in harm’s way from the fire, which is estimated to have caused nearly $400,000 in damages. Stratton also noted that the fire was strong, caused by the billowing winds known to occur in the area.

Payton’s story of heroism may not be as dynamic as most tales would tell, but as realities stories would share, it speaks volumes about a dog’s loyalty to his master and family.

Pooch sniffs out Cancer

We often hear of heroic dogs, who, in the face of danger, beat the odds in saving masters and members of the family, jumping into burning houses or diving into lakes, in an effort to rescue would-be victims of accidents.

For Lexie, a hero dog by her own right, no death defying feats came with how she saved Lisa Hillje from danger.

Lexie simply “sniffed out” a tumor growing in her master’s body.

A Basset Hound mix, Lexie noted something different going on on her master’s body, jumping up and down on Hillje’s chest telling Hillje that something was up. Hillje, who had undergone a test a few months back (with negative results for cancer), then noticed a lump right on the spot where Lexie had been jumping up and down on.

Hillje then headed out for a mammogram, which revealed that Hillje did have cancer. Detected early, doctors were able to administer the right treatment in controlling the spread of the condition, which has remained in remission.

But the story doesn’t end there.

Noticing some changes in Lexie’s day to day habits, Hillje found Lexie’s lack of appetite and constant thirst disturbing, which brought Lexie to the capable hands of a veterinarian. The trip to the vet revealed tumors in Lexie’s liver, with a diagnosis telling Hillje that Lexie only had about a month to live.

Hillje wouldn’t have any of that, so after a series of holistic treatments for Lexie, both Lexie and Hillje are doing well, with each bonded by a pact which can’t be said happens every day.

As heroic comes, Lexie and Hillje both played a role in being a hero for each other.
