The Sphinx

The sphinx or sphynx remains to be one of the most distinct domestic cat breed, identifiable though the breed’s lack of a full coat of fur. Though often described as “hairless”, the sphinx actually does have hair, though not as “thick” as one would consider hair on cats to be.

Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore managed to showcase the unique breed as a CGI-live action feature, with the 2010 hit revisiting the original Cats and Dogs premise of secret agent cats and dogs locked in a secret war.

In the “Cats and Dogs” world, humans are not aware of an ongoing dispute among the two most common domestic pets. With each faction having a stand towards “tolerating” the human existence, the showcase feature is one which has been well loved by children and adults alike.

In Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore, a sphinx cat played the role of antagonist, with the voice talents of Bette Midler giving life to the character.

“Hairless”, the unique breed also has unique care and maintenance requirements, particulars which are not often necessary with regular cat breeds.

Regular bathing would be one requirement, with sphinx cats requiring baths on a regular basis. With normal cats, certain body oils are readily absorbed by their fur. Since sphinx cats don’t have a full coat of fur, weekly baths are required to do away with the build up of oils on their skin surfaces.

Ear was also tends to be a problem with sphinx cats, also caused by the breed’s lack of a full fur of coat. Also, given the fact that they don’t have a full fur coat, sphinx cats should not be over exposed to direct sunlight for long extended durations.

Though they don’t have a full coat of fur, sphinx cats are still cats, and as such they still come with the inherent traits – the good and bad – which cats are known to have.

Difference Between Peterbald Cat And a Sphynx Cat

Many people ask about the differences between cats and cat Peterbald Sphynx type. Both cats are indeed very similar, they seem not to have hair and they are also the same shape. But the reality is not so! Both types of cats are furry, they have different genes. The gene that makes the hair Peterbald is a dominant gene, whereas the gene that makes the bald Sphynx is recessive gene. They have too look completely different. So this cat actually has quite a lot of difference.

This is significant difference between the Peterbald and the Sphynx;

  • The gene responsible for the lack of hair is completely different. Peterbald the gene is dominant, while the sphinx is recessive. Sphynx feel like warm peach or beige, Peterbald can have a variety of layers of bats clinging to a hair brush.

sphynx cat tattoo

There are pros and cons on tattooing a Sphynx cat. Below are some of them:

Pros

Some people consider tattooing a Sphynx cat as beautiful, even cute, especially when both the cat and its owner have the same tattoo. There’s no denying a beautifully made tattoo will enhance almost anyone or anything it is tattooed on. Tattooing Sphynx cats did not gain momentum until 2009 when a video of Oksana Popova tattooing her Sphynx cat, Mickey, with a Tutankhamen tattoo on its chest, appeared on the Internet. Arguably the tattoo wasn’t a very beautiful one. Many others were inspired to also put a tattoo on their cats—making better ones in the process. From Russia, the tattooed Sphynx trend spread around the world. Another argument for tattooing a Sphynx cat is that a tattoo does not hurt as bad as it looks and cats are also regularly tattooed for identification purposes so it’s no big deal.

Cons

Various complaints have been raised by animal rights groups about the spreading trend of tattooing Sphynx cats. The biggest argument against tattooing a Sphynx cat for cosmetic reasons is the very motive itself: selfish reason. People against tattooing Sphynx cats argue that the big difference between tattooing identifying marks on cats and tattooing designs on Sphynx cats is that the tattoo is done for safety reasons on cats while a cosmetic tattoo is is only for the owner’s perceived satisfaction (not to mention the chances for injury is greater on the latter because the tattoo takes longer to do and covers a larger area, and you’ll need to sedate the cat for longer periods).

It seems doing something painful to an animal for its own good is different from doing something painful to it for its owner’s glory. Both cases don’t involve the animal’s opinion. One can argue the same about tail-docking, ear cropping and castration, but this is a sensitive topic. The closest thing to human beings is circumcision of newborn males and female circumcision in some parts of the world.

Whatever side you are on, this thing is true: no pain, no gain. Even if the pain is at the animals’ expense.
